We’ve trained our minds to jump from one distraction to the next — tap, scroll, swipe, repeat. It’s no wonder ancient philosophers compared the mind to a monkey. They knew what neuroscience is only now confirming: the mind cannot keep still.
Several things. First, I like your distinction between Intellect and Mind. They operate from different regions of the brain, don’t they? One impulse and short term memory. The other choice and learning. Second, I read a book years ago, The Shallows, and from that I adopted a new practice. When I shift from internet use to reading or writing, I spend a few moments reading out loud to engage my intellect (to use your terms). It seems to work, signaling my mind and body to the change. Finally, thank you for writing and sharing this. We have a challenge to adjust and your insights are greatly appreciated! And… hi 👋🏻
Hi Kim. What I share here is generally unknown throughout the world — distinction of mind and intellect.
Keep on engaging your intellect — your clarity, discernment, reason, and most importantly your ability to see life as it is, not as you would like it to be.
Thankyou Meredith just what i needed to read today as a reminder of, if we so allow it, how others can shape our thinking with their own monkey minds! I love the truth of the whole article, with the added 3 steps on how to train the intellect! i really love the Conclusion:_)
Glad you liked it Amilia. It’s true, isn’t it? The world is full of restless minds, and if we’re not watchful, we can easily be swept along with them. Strengthening the intellect really is the key — it helps us stay centred, calm, and clear no matter what’s happening around us. Thank you Amilia
Yes it's True! We can be influenced easily, part of it i feel is that we all want to Belong, but by just being who we are - we already Belong! the Intellect that you mention in your reply & article reminds me of "the eye of the storm" looking forward to finally becoming this-getting better:_)
This was such a thoughtful read. I really appreciated the clarity and structure you brought to it. I especially loved the three steps you laid out: higher purpose, morning ritual, and inner equanimity. I’m genuinely glad I found your writing here.
You mentioned an early morning ritual. When you read in the mornings, do you return to books you’ve already read, or do you explore new material as well? I’m asking because it’s often hard to find consistently meaningful writing that really nourishes the intellect, and I’m curious how you approach that practice yourself.

Or maybe just good and thoughtful communication, videos and quotes don't have to be a bad thing, do they!?
