The Mirror of Your Mind
You see people and things not as they are, but as you are.
MANY years ago, a noble King wanted to prove that the world is a reflection of one’s own mind. So he requested his son, who was good, to find him an evil man to undertake a particular task.
The prince wholeheartedly accepted the challenge and, without hesitation, commenced his search.
The King then appealed to his villainous nephew to find him an honest person to manage an important assignment. The King’s nephew welcomed the challenge and immediately began his quest.
After some time, the prince returned disheartened and disillusioned. He humbly approached the King and apologised, explaining that he had travelled far and wide, but despite his best efforts, he was unable to find a single evil person.
The King’s nephew had also travelled the country. He too was despondent and apologised to the King. Try as he might, he was unable to locate a single virtuous soul.
This story shows us that the world is nothing but a mirror, reflecting our own thoughts. A good world is a reflection of good thoughts, and a bad world is a reflection of bad thoughts.
As You Think, So You Become
The law of life is, ‘As you think, so you become.’ You become what you repeatedly think about. Who you are today is the result of your thinking. Your thinking is the cause, and the effect is the person you see in the mirror. Who you will be tomorrow will depend on what you think today.
You create yourself and your life by your own thinking. You are what your thoughts are. And you see the world according to your thoughts. An artist sees the world artistically. A scientist sees it scientifically, and a philosopher sees the world philosophically.
Change Your Thoughts
There is no use complaining or cursing the world if we’re unhappy. We are the makers of our misery and misfortune. No one else.
It is never the other person or situation that causes our sorrow and suffering. Yet, they are the first we blame. We are very quick to point the finger, forgetting three fingers are pointing back! This indicates that we are the cause, not what we’re blaming.
To change what we blame, we must change our thinking. By changing our thinking, the things we think about change.
In Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, Hamlet thought Denmark was a prison. His friends thought differently. He then philosophises and says, “Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
You Can Change The World
People try in vain to change the world around them. They hope that by improving their surroundings, their life will improve. This may work temporarily, but as a great philosopher once said, “Changing the world is like straightening a dog’s tail.”
If we focus our attention on improving the world without first improving ourselves, then no matter how wonderful our lives are externally, we will never be truly happy. We will always find fault somewhere, in someone or something, never once realising that the fault is within.
To be happy, it’s not enough to change our outer world; we must change our inner world of thoughts. The moment we improve our thoughts and thinking, the world transforms. This is how we can change the world.
It all starts within.
Change your thinking and you change the world.
