As You Think So You Become
How kindness leads to peace and selfishness leads to suffering.
ONCE upon a time, there lived a yogi who considered himself to be a holy man. He drank only water and ate only fruits and nuts. He practised yoga and meditation daily and preached to the people.
In the same town, there lived an evil woman. Every day, the yogi warned her that her wickedness would lead her straight to hell. The poor woman could not change because it was her only livelihood. She wept and prayed to God, begging Him to forgive her because she could not help herself.
As time went by, both the yogi and the evil woman died. The angels took the evil woman to heaven, while the demons claimed the yogi's soul.
“What is this?” exclaimed the yogi. “Have I not lived a pure and holy life? Why should I be taken to hell, while this wicked woman is taken to heaven?”
The demons answered, “While this woman committed unholy acts, her mind was always fixed on the Higher. She sought deliverance, which has now come to her. But you, on the contrary, while you performed holy acts, your mind was always fixed on the wickedness of others. You saw only sin. You thought only of sin, so now you have to go to that place where only sin is.”
The moral of the story is simple: the outer life accounts for little. It’s what you THINK about that makes you who you truly are.
As You Think, So You Become
The infallible law of life is, as you think, so you become. You become what you repeatedly think about. If you think mean and manipulative thoughts, you become mean and manipulative. If you think kind and unselfish thoughts, you become kind and unselfish.
Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “You become what you think about all day long.” So, if you constantly think about yourself and what you can get from the world to make your life better, then you’ll always be anxious and worried, "What about me?".
On the other hand, if you think of others and how you can help make their lives easier, then you’ll be peaceful and successful.
The Power of the Invisible
As you think so you become embraces every aspect of life. Every situation that you find yourself in has its roots hidden in the invisible seeds of thought.
The act of writing starts with a thought of writing. An act of kindness begins with kind thoughts. The actions of running, cycling, and eating the right type of food start with thoughts of getting fit and healthy.
Who you are and what you experience, at every moment of your life, is the result of your own thoughts.
As your thoughts, so your mind. As your mind, so your actions. As your actions, so your environment and experiences. Like causes always produce like effects.
Many people, especially those in hardship or suffering from chronic illness, don't accept the intimate connection between thoughts and circumstances. Nevertheless, there is no denying this truth. Whatever is happening on the outside is a reflection of what is happening on the inside.
The World is a Reflection
The world is a reflection of your thoughts. If your thoughts are negative, then negative thoughts vibrate into the world, and what we experience is negativity. You can't say that person has a negative vibe? Or that person has a positive vibe? The "vibe" is coming from inside you. You create the vibe through your own thinking.
What you experience in life is a reflection of what’s inside you.
Who you are is a mirror reflecting your own mind. Your body is a reflection of your mind. A healthy body means healthy thoughts. A sluggish body reveals sluggish thoughts. Your mind is a constant flow of thoughts. So too, your world is a continual reflection of your thoughts.
Final Contemplation
What are your thoughts today? Are you harbouring any negativity or self-doubt? Or are your thoughts on what you can do for others? What unselfish act can you do for another? Always strive to be unselfish. Strive to become a better human; more loving, kind and generous.
Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that pervades your mind. Drape yourself in loving kindness and lofty dreams, and as you dream so shall you become.
Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be. Your greatest achievement was, at one time, a dream. Keep striving for the highest. Conquer all doubt. Believe in yourself and you will get there.
