Calm Your Mind with Your Discerning Intellect
An ancient method for modern times.
YEARS ago, I had the privilege of meeting an extraordinary man: Swami A. Parthasarathy, a Self-realised, Indian sage and philosopher. I was in my twenties then, full of questions about life: “What is happiness?” “Where is happiness?” “What am I meant to be doing?” and “What is the purpose of it all?”
Swamiji, as we called him, held the answers to life’s big questions. But what struck me most wasn’t just his deep wisdom, but his humility. He never came across as someone claiming to “know it all.” His insights were shared with grace, never with ego.
Inspired, I travelled to India to learn from him. And among the many life-changing lessons he taught, one has served me more than any other: how to steady a restless mind with the calm strength of the intellect.
This single lesson has guided me through countless challenges. When life feels overwhelming, the key is to stay centred by allowing your discerning intellect to calmly steer the way.
The Adult-Child Analogy
To understand this, think of your mind as a child and your intellect as an adult.
The mind, like a child, is never still. It is always wanting something. Whether you’re working, eating, exercising, watching TV, cleaning, or scrolling, it’s the mind at play. It’s driven by desires and constantly seeks stimulation.
Now, picture trying to read this article with a two-year-old bouncing around you. That’s your mind. It’s full of desires, easily distracted, and always pulling you away from the point of focus.
The intellect, on the other hand, is like a mature adult. It observes. It reasons. It ensures the “child” doesn’t get into trouble—whether that’s worry, anxiety, fear, stress, anger, addiction, overwhelm, or burnout.
Why the Intellect Matters
Your intellect is your power to think clearly, to discern, observe, reflect, and to choose wisely. It’s pragmatic and grounded in reality.
Where the mind is emotional and impulsive, the intellect is balanced and objective. It clearly sees things as they are, not as you would like them to be.
These two faculties, the mind and the intellect, are what guide your actions. But here’s the thing: most of us let the child take the wheel, while the adult naps in the passenger seat. And that’s when mental chaos and suffering arise.
The Way Forward
The solution is simple, though not always easy: wake up the adult in you. Let your intellect take charge. Let the mind sit quietly in the back seat. This does not mean stifling the mind; you’re simply protecting it, like a loving parent protects their child.
When you do this, life becomes clearer and happier. You become more calm, composed, and resilient, ready to face whatever challenge comes your way with inner strength, steadiness, dignity and poise.
