Gain Peace By Dissolving Ego
Three practical ways to loosen the grip of "I, me, my, and mine."
MANY years ago, in my early twenties, before I travelled to India to study Vedanta1 I was arrogant, self-centred, and unhappy.
It wasn’t until I immersed myself in Vedanta that I began to see the connection between ego, selfishness, and suffering.
The truth is simple: the more driven you are by ego and self-interest, the more anxious, stressed and depressed you become.
It’s only when you loosen your grip of I, me, my, and mine and act from kindness, humility, selflessness and generosity that you begin to experience joy and peace.
Vedanta teaches us that happiness isn’t found in feeding the ego but in dissolving it.
So how do we let go of the ego?
Below are three practical ways, utilising your body, mind and intellect, to help dissolve the ego and emerge more joyful and peaceful.
1. Perform Right Action
To dissolve the ego, your body must be engaged is selfless action, which is dedicating your actions towards a higher cause.
Ask yourself, “Who am I working for?”
If you’re working for yourself, then you are feeding your ego. Anxiety, fear and stress are guaranteed.
But when you work selflessly, for the bigger picture, without any expectations of returns, then dissolve your ego and gain PEACE.
2: Nurture your Nature
You have a precious diamond in you that needs to be discovered. It is your own unique and distinct nature.
You are not meant merely to survive. Slaving in a job just because it pays the bills. No, you are meant for greater things.
You are meant to be doing something that makes your heart sing.
Let your mind discover this truth. You are here to live, to create, to contribute, to do what makes your spirit come alive.
When you align with your true nature, you unlock two powerful gifts: peace and power. Peace, because you are no longer at war with yourself and power, because you begin to move with clarity and conviction.
3. Remember the Self
Remember the Self, pure Consciousness, in all actions. Just as a device cannot function without electricity, action is not possible without the power of pure Consciousness—the unseen Source that animates all movement.
Let your intellect fix remembering the Self, pure Consciousness, as your ideal in life.
When you remember this truth, you become clear and unshakable.
You become anchored in a higher purpose. Grounded. Objective. Solid and stable. But without this discipline, you forget who you are and become entangled in the world’s illusions.
Let your intellect be your compass, always pointing back to your true Self.
